In Condemnation of the People of Basra


You were an army under the command of a woman and subject to a beast. When she (Aisha) neighed, you responded to her call; and when she was wounded, you fled in retreat. You are people of low morals and treachery. The outward appearance of your religion is different from its inner reality. Even the water of your land is brackish. Whoever resides among you is trapped in a web of sins, and whoever departs from you finds the mercy of his Lord.


I can almost see it – the coming scene is vivid before my eyes: your mosque will stand out like the bow of a ship while Allah has already sent down punishment upon your city, from above and below, and it will be submerged along with its inhabitants.


(In another narration:) By God, your city shall surely be drowned, to the point that its mosque will appear like the bow of a ship, or like the breast of an ostrich sitting deep in the water — it is as though I am looking at it now.


(And in another version:) Like the breast of a bird in the depth of the sea.


(Another version says:) Your city is the most filthy and foul-smelling of all cities on account of its soil. It is close to the sea and far from the sky. Out of ten parts of evil, nine exist within it. Whoever enters it becomes captive to sin, and whoever leaves it is touched by divine pardon. I can almost see with my own eyes that the town has been overwhelmed by a flood to such an extent that nothing remains visible except the pebbles of the mosque — and they appear like the breast of a bird submerged in the sea.

اہل بصرہ کی مذمت میں . تم ایک عورت کی سپاہ اور ایک چوپائے کے تابع تھے۔ وہ بلبلا یا تو تم لبیک کہتے ہوئے بڑھے اور وہ زخمی ہوا تو تم بھاگ کھڑے ہوئے ۔ تم پست اخلاق و عہد شکن ہو تمہارے دین کا ظاہر کچھ ہے اور باطن کچھ۔ تمہاری سرزمین کا پانی تک شور ہے تم میں اقامت کرنے والا گناہوں کے جال میں جکڑا ہواہے


 اور تم میں سے نکل جانے والا اپنے پروردگار کی رحمت کو پالینے والا ہے۔ وہ ( آنے والا) منظر میری آنکھوں میں پھر رہا ہے جبکہ تمہاری مسجد یوں نمایاں ہوگی جس طرح کشتی کا سینہ در آنحالیکہ اللہ نے تمہارے شہر میں اس کے اوپر اور اس کے نیچے سے عذاب بھیج دیا ہوگا اور وہ اپنے رہنے والوں سمیت ڈوب چکا ہوگا ۔


ایک اور روایت میں یوں ہے ) خدا کی قسم تمہارا شہر غرق ہو کر رہے گا اس حد تک کہ اس کی مسجد کشتی کے اگلے حصے یا سینے کے بھل بیٹھے ہوئے شتر مرغ کی طرح گویا مجھے نظر آرہی ہے۔ ایک اور روایت میں اس طرح ہے) جیسے پانی کے گہراؤ میں پرندے کا سینہ۔ (ایک اور روایت میں اس طرح ہے ) تمہارا شہر اللہ کے سب شہروں میں مٹی کے لحاظ سے گندا اور بد بودار ہے


۔ یہ (سمندر کے ) پانی سے قریب اور آسمان سے دور ہے۔ برائی کے دس حصوں میں سے نو حصے اس میں پائے جاتے ہیں جو اس میں آپہنچا وہ اپنے گناہوں میں اسیر ہے اور جو اس سے چل دیا عفو الہی اس کے شریک حال رہا۔ گویا میں اپنی آنکھوں سے اس بستی کو دیکھ رہا ہوں کہ سیلاب نے اسے اس حد تک ڈھانپ لیا ہے کہ مسجد کے کنکروں کے سوا کچھ نظر نہیں آتا اور وہ یوں معلوم ہوتے ہیں جیسے سمندر کے گہراؤ میں پرندے کا سینہ
